Text:
2Samuel 6:9-11:
9: And David was afraid of the LORD that day, and said, How shall the ark of the LORD come to me?
10: So David would not remove the ark of the LORD unto him into the city of David: but David carried it aside into the house of Obed-edom the Gittite.
11: And the ark of the LORD continued in the house of Obed-edom the Gittite three months: and the LORD blessed Obed-edom, and all his household.
Theme:
When The Lord Comes In
Introduction:
- The text comes from 2Samuel which is the 10th book of the Old Testament and was written by Samuel, Gad, and Nathan. The books of 1st and 2nd Samuel and 1st and 2nd Kings were originally know as the four “Books of the Kings” since they contained much historical information. However, the purpose of the books was to present a history of the kingdom of God in its gradual development, and not of the events of the reigns of the successive rulers.
- The Ark of the Covenant had just been regained by the people of Israel and was being taken from its previous captivity in Philistia. While traveling with the Ark, Uzzah had just stricken dead after having touched the Ark when he thought that it was about to tumble over. This left David in fear. So, David left the ark at the house of Obed-edom until he could figure out how to get the Ark of the Lord to Jerusalem.
- There was something unique about this stop on the Ark’s journey.
- The Ark had been:
- Carried by the priests to the bed of the Jordan causing the river to separate.
- Carried in the procession around Jericho as the sound of horns signaled the walls to fall.
- Resting in the tabernacle in Gilgal for a season
- Residing in Shiloh for 300 to 400 years
- Carried to the field of battle against the Philistines
- Taken into captivity by the Philistines for 7 months
- Kept in Kirjath-Jearim for 20 years
- After our text the Ark would be:
- Kept in Jerusalem in the Temple
- Taken away by the Babylonians to never be seen again
- Now in our text the mighty Ark of the Covenant is residing at the humble home of Obed-edom
- The Ark had been:
- When The Lord Comes In
Body:
- Obed-Edom was a Gittite Levite…Levites were the tribe from which the priests were taken…specifically out of the family of Aaron…out of the order of Melchezidek, the first high priest of Israel.
- Obed-edom means “Servant of Edom” – Obed-Edom had the responsibility of being a doorkeeper for the Ark of the Covenant.
- 1Chronicles 15:24 – “Obed-edom and Jehiah were doorkeepers for the ark”
- Seemingly menial, insignificant responsibility
- A Levite was a doorkeeper – God’s service is everyone’s responsibility from the pulpit to the pew.
- It’s alright because the Old folks always said that they would rather be a “doorkeeper” in the Kingdom than to have mansions in this world.
- Obed-Edom had to be a man of great integrity, humility, and perseverance to proudly hold the lineage of a Levite while “only” being a doorkeeper.
- A Levite was a doorkeeper – God’s service is everyone’s responsibility from the pulpit to the pew.
But now the mighty Ark of the Covenant is residing at the humble home of this doorkeeper, Obed-edom
- Think of the anxiety Obed-edom must have felt:
- “Who am I to keep the Ark? I am just a doorkeeper.”
- “My house is a humble home…not worthy to house the Ark of the Covenant!
- Think of the preparation that Obed-edom must have felt the need to perform:
- “My house is not clean enough to welcome the Ark of the Covenant.”
- “My life is not perfect. How can I then host perfection in the Ark?”
- Think of the change the Ark would bring to Obed-edom’s life:
- “I can’t let wrongdoings slide in my home like I did before.”
- “I have to stand more steadfast since I will be the host of the Ark.”
But, there were three things about Obed-edom in this story.
- David knew Obed-edom
- Obed-edom’s good service was known and his house was respected
- Obed-edom was available to receive the Ark
- It is not his capability…but his AVAILABILITY that David needed.
- Obed-edom received the Ark when it came
- He was willing. Obed-edom had submitted himself to the Will of God.
We must be as Obed-edom:
- Of good report
- Matthew 5:16 says, “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.”
- Available
- Abraham told God, “Here I am”
- Jacob told the Angel, “Here am I”
- Samuel told God, “Here am I”
- Isaiah told God, “Here am I”
- When will we tell God, “Here am I”?
- Totally submitted
- Matthew 22:37, “Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.”
Conclusion:
- But then, When The Lord Comes In
- The text then says, “and the LORD blessed Obed-edom, and all his household”
- Obed-edom got the blessing of God’s Presence in the Ark of the Covenant.
- His Presence gives you a four-fold blessing
- Peace
- He gives that PEACE that surpasses all understanding.
- Protection
- The Lord is my refuge and my strength, whom shall I fear?
- Provision
- But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.
- Power
- Power to save you
- Power to keep you
- Power to strengthen you
- Power to change you
- Power to move you
- Power to forgive you
- Power to uplift you!
- Peace
- That’s what happens When The Lord Comes In!
- When the Lord comes in, God’s Servant’s household is blessed:
- Romans 8:28 teaches us that
“And we know that… ALL THINGS … WORK TOGETHER… FOR GOOD …to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.”
