Text:
Mark 2:1-2:
1 And again he entered into Capernaum after some days; and it was noised that he was in the house.
2 And straightway many were gathered together, insomuch that there was no room to receive them, no, not so much as about the door: and he preached the word unto them.
Luke 19:37:
37 And when he was come nigh, even now at the descent of the mount of Olives, the whole multitude of the disciples began to rejoice and praise God with a loud voice for all the mighty works that they had seen;
38 Saying, Blessed be the King that cometh in the name of the Lord: peace in heaven, and glory in the highest.
39 And some of the Pharisees from among the multitude said unto him, Master, rebuke thy disciples.
40 And he answered and said unto them, I tell you that, if these should hold their peace, the stones would immediately cry out.
Theme:
Let’s Make Some Noise
Introduction:
The two books that contain our texts happen to be two of the four Gospels of Jesus, the Christ, outlining the “life and times”, if you will, of our Savior.
- The Gospel According to Mark is the second of the four Gospels of the New Testament and therefore the second of the books of the New Testament. The Gospel is believed the have been written by Mark, the young interpreter of Peter. Although Mark was not an eye or ear witness of Jesus and His teaching, Mark absorbed the words of Peter to give him his content for the book.
- In his not passionate living the events of Jesus’ life, Mark understandably does not portray Jesus in any subjective aura like the other Gospels.
- Matthew à the Messiah
- Luke à the Universal Redeemer
- Mark gets right to the heart of the matter in depicting Jesus during His ministry in Galilee.
- Mark gives us the full picture of who Jesus was – the wonder-working Son of God!
- In his not passionate living the events of Jesus’ life, Mark understandably does not portray Jesus in any subjective aura like the other Gospels.
- The Gospel According to Saint Luke is the third of the four synoptic Gospels.
- Written by Luke the physician who also wrote the Acts of the Apostles
- Luke wrote of accounts that he had gathered in his research concerning the life and times of the Master.
- Luke wrote in a specificity and forthrightness that was typical of his Greek background and education while, at the same time, focusing on more the peculiararities of the Jesus’ life, character, and actions.
- Luke’s primary audience was the Gentile population that surrounded first century Palestine. Therefore, his writing would get to the point and give the facts.
- When speaking with non-believers about Jesus, they want to know the facts and don’t want to hear religious rhetoric or biblical “fluff”.
Our texts refers to people making “noise”. We often encounter various types of noise in our lives:
- Although the cry of a newborn baby initially gives the sensation of life have been thrusted into this mean world, after a few weeks the strong cry of the baby in the home at 2am tends be described as NOISE.
- Although when a person is saying what you want to hear we call them a good conversationalist, when they are speaking of nothing constructive to our taste, we describe their conversation as NOISE.
- Although the movie was sensational, after you fall asleep the sounds of the movie become NOISE that wakes you up.
Body:
- We don’t want to make the WRONG noise! — We tend to gossip, tattle, backbite, and argue!!
- The Bible speaks of such in Ephesians 2:3 when Paul says, “Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others.”
- The Bible gives examples of the power of the “grapevine” – People can spread rumors quickly and effectively!
- Our text says plainly in Mark 2:1, “it was noised that he was in the house”
- Acts 2:6, “Now when this was noised abroad, the multitude came together, and were confounded, because that every man heard them speak in his own language.”
- Luke 1:65, “And fear came on all that dwelt round about them: and all these sayings were noised abroad throughout all the hill country of Judaea.”
- The Bible also sheds light on people’s making noise so that they don’t have to hear:).
- We should be listening and not making noise
- As it says in Revelations chapters 2 & 3, “He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches.”
- James 1:19, “Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath:”
- James 1:26, “If any man among you seem to be religious, and bridleth not his tongue, but deceiveth his own heart, this man’s religion is vain.”
- We should be listening and not making noise
- However, are we just as effective in making the RIGHT “noise”
- We have ALL been given the commandment to TELL OTHERS about Jesus
- Jesus said in Matthew 28:19, “Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:”
- David describes the noise that we are to make as generally a JOYFUL NOISE.
- Psalms 100:1 exclaims, “Make a joyful noise unto the LORD, all ye lands.”
- Psalms 98:4 further explains, “Make a joyful noise unto the LORD, all the earth: make a loud noise, and rejoice, and sing praise.”
- We have ALL been given the commandment to TELL OTHERS about Jesus
- Let us go further to explain what the NOISE is that we are supposed to be making so that we don’t get confused!
- How do we “Make Some Noise”?
- With our hands
- Lamentations 3:41, “Let us lift up our heart with our hands unto God in the heavens.”
- Psalms 47:1, “O clap your hands, all ye people; shout unto God with the voice of triumph.”
- With our feet
- Ezekiel 25:6-7, “For thus saith the Lord GOD; Because thou hast clapped thine hands, and stamped with the feet, and rejoiced in heart with all thy despite against the land of Israel; Behold, therefore I will stretch out mine hand upon thee, and will deliver thee for a spoil to the heathen; and I will cut thee off from the people, and I will cause thee to perish out of the countries: I will destroy thee; and thou shalt know that I am the LORD.”
- With instruments
- 1 Samuel 16:23, “And it came to pass, when the evil spirit from God was upon Saul, that David took an harp, and played with his hand: so Saul was refreshed, and was well, and the evil spirit departed from him.”
- Psalms 33:2, “Praise the LORD with harp: sing unto him with the psaltery and an instrument of ten strings.”
- With our voices in song
- Psalms 96:1, “O sing unto the LORD a new song: sing unto the LORD, all the earth.”
- Isaiah 42:10, “Sing unto the LORD a new song, and his praise from the end of the earth, ye that go down to the sea, and all that is therein; the isles, and the inhabitants thereof.”
- Revelation 14:3 confirms, “And they sung as it were a new song before the throne….”
- With our prayers and supplication
- Job 36:29, “Also can any understand the spreadings of the clouds, or the noise of his tabernacle?”
- Philippians 4:6, “Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.”
- With our testimony
- Psalms 78:5, “For he established a testimony in Jacob, and appointed a law in Israel, which he commanded our fathers, that they should make them known to their children:”
- Revelation 12:11, “And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death.”
- We are to tell someone else about Jesus!!
- With our praise
- Psalms 34:1, “I will bless the LORD at all times: his praise shall continually be in my mouth.”
- Psalms 103:1, “ Bless the LORD, O my soul: and all that is within me, bless his holy name.”
- We are to praise Him with our WHOLE self, mind, body, soul, and spirit!!!!!
- With our hands
Conclusion:
- Why should we “Make Some Noise”?
- He delivered us!
- Psalms 50:15 “And call upon me in the day of trouble: I will deliver thee, and thou shalt glorify me.”
- 1 Peter 2:9, “But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light:”
- He has done great things!
- Luke 19:37 elaborates, “…the whole multitude of the disciples began to rejoice and praise God with a loud voice for all the mighty works that they had seen;”
- Deuteronomy 10:21, “He is thy praise, and he is thy God, that hath done for thee these great and terrible things, which thine eyes have seen.”
- Luke 19:37, “And when he was come nigh, even now at the descent of the mount of Olives, the whole multitude of the disciples began to rejoice and praise God with a loud voice for all the mighty works that they had seen;”
- What happens if we don’t?
- We lose the “seal” of our Salvation!
- 2Corinthians 9:15, “Thanks be unto God for his unspeakable gift.”
- Psalms 50:23, “Whoso offereth praise glorifieth me: and to him that ordereth his conversation aright will I shew the salvation of God.”
- If we don’t, someone (or something will)!
- Jesus said in Luke 19:40, in response to the disciples being told to be quiet, “if these should hold their peace, the stones would immediately cry out.”
- God will get a rock to do our job if we won’t!!
- God got a mule to turn Balaam around
- God got a burning bush to give Moses direction
- God got a angel to make Jacob realize who he was
- God got a ram in a bush to seal His relationship with Abraham
- Jesus used a little boy’s lunch to feed 5000 men
- God is using a “wretch like me” to tell His Story!!
- I don’t want a rock to cry out for me!
- I can make some noise for what He has done
- I can make some noise for what He is doing
- I can make some noise for what HE is gonna do in and with my life
- LET’S MAKE SOME NOISE!!!!
- We lose the “seal” of our Salvation!
- He delivered us!
