Text:
2Timothy 1:6-7:
6 Wherefore I put thee in remembrance that thou stir up the gift of God, which is in thee by the putting on of my hands.
7 For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.
Theme:
It’s In You
Introduction:
- Our text is found in the Second Epistle of Paul to Timothy, the second letter written to Timothy by Paul from his captivity in Rome. This is believed to be the last letter that Paul wrote.
- Timothy and Paul had a special relationship. Timothy was an evangelist who was first converted by Paul’s ministry which is why Paul calls Timothy his “own son in the faith”.
- Our text is a most foundational scripture in the words of Paul shared to his “son in the ministry, Timothy. We all must draw from this “keeping it real” wisdom that Paul is imparting!
- You must be born again
- Acts 2:21, “And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved.”
- If you need more detail….
- Romans 10:9, “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.”
- We must receive the Holy Spirit into our lives for our purpose to be achieved
- 1Thessalonians 4:8, “He therefore that despiseth, despiseth not man, but God, who hath also given unto us his holy Spirit.”
- What does the Holy Spirit bring? à Acts 1:8, “But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.”
- The Holy Spirit manifests itself IN (“in thee”) our lives through ordination, the laying on of hands.
- Holy Spirit given by Spiritual hands à Acts 8:18, “And when Simon saw that through laying on of the apostles’ hands the Holy Ghost was given…”
- As with Timothy in our text à 1Timothy 4:14, “Neglect not the gift that is in thee, which was given thee by prophecy, with the laying on of the hands of the presbytery.”
- Touched by the Holy Spirit Himself à Acts 2:4, “And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.”
- Holy Spirit given by Spiritual hands à Acts 8:18, “And when Simon saw that through laying on of the apostles’ hands the Holy Ghost was given…”
- You must be born again
- Paul instructed Timothy to “stir up the gift” because Paul already knew that the “gift” was IN Timothy!
- The verse before our text clarifies this point….
- 2Timothy 1:5, “When I call to remembrance the unfeigned faith that is in thee, which dwelt first in thy grandmother Lois, and thy mother Eunice; and I am persuaded that in thee also.”
- Could someone vouch for us as Paul did for Timothy?
- The verse before our text clarifies this point….
- This was not the first time the Paul had told this to Timothy.
- Paul says in our text “Wherefore I put thee in remembrance”
- Paul had told Timothy this before!
- Timothy needed to be reminded!
- We know better but sometimes just need to be reminded!!
- Peter said it plainly à 2Peter 1:13, “Yea, I think it meet, as long as I am in this tabernacle, to stir you up by putting you in remembrance;”
- We can’t forget where we came from à Hebrews 10:32, “But call to remembrance the former days, in which, after ye were illuminated, ye endured a great fight of afflictions;”
- Even Jesus spoke of the value of remembering when He said à 1Corinthians 11:24, “…this do in remembrance of me.”
- Timothy basically put it into three simple words è IT’S IN YOU!
- Paul says in our text “Wherefore I put thee in remembrance”
Body:
- How many of us need to grasp those three simple words…
- NOT “I Love You”
- But IT’S IN YOU
- When we want a change à IT’S IN YOU
- When we want to feel better à IT’S IN YOU
- When we want a friend à IT’S IN YOU
- When we want healing à IT’S IN YOU
- When we want a helping hand à IT’S IN YOU
- But IT’S IN YOU
- NOT “I Love You”
- But let’s make sure that we understand what “IT” is?
- “IT” is God’s Holy Spirit!
- What is God’s Holy Spirit?
- The Holy Spirit is the third person in the blessed Trinity. He is said to proceed from the Father, and to be sent by the Father and the Son upon disciples, to be the Spirit of the Father, and the Spirit of Christ.
- He is a person…He is a Divine Person…He has a specific work to do!
- The Holy Spirit IN us
- 1)GIVES US IDENTITY,
- 2)ALLOWS US TO BE IN RELATIONSHIP WITH HIM, and
- 3)QUALIFIES US FOR THE WORK TO DO IN HIM
- So we can see why it is good to know that IT’S IN YOU!
-
- The BENEFITS of God’s Spirit IN us
- Our Power vs. All Power
- I have no power but God has ALL POWER!
- John 15:5, “I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.”
- Our Love vs. His Love
- 1John 4:18, “There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love.”
- Our love is limited but God’s love is eternal
- Our love is conditional but God’s love is unconditional
- Our love can sap the life out of another but God’s love gives life
- Our love never forgets but God’s love always remembers
- Our love is one way today and another way tomorrow but God’s love is the same yesterday, today and forever!
- 1John 4:18, “There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love.”
- Our Mind vs. The Mind of Christ
- Philippians 2:5, “Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus:”
- Philippians 4:8, “Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.”
- So we must trade one in for the other!
- Proverbs 3:5, “Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.”
- Our Power vs. All Power
- The BENEFITS of God’s Spirit IN us
Conclusion:
- There is also a Joy of God’s Spirit being IN us!
- This is where we can find my testimony!
- Romans 8:26-28 says, “Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: FOR WE KNOW not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God. AND WE KNOW that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.”
