Thank God For My Mama!
When I turned twelve years old, I was in the kitchen watching my grandmama cook as I always did. She looked at me and said, “It’s your birthday! So now you are of age! Since you are, I want you to take care of your mama.” This was an odd commissioning for a twelve year old boy, but I knew that grandmama was very serious. I saw it in her eyes and I heard it in her voice. I just looked at her and obediently said, “Yes, Ma’am!” Then she said, “I am gonna be depending on you to take care of your mama.” I will never forget that because even though I was not very close with her, even though I would always rather stay on the farm with grandmama and granddaddy than be with her, I now had a job to do…because grandmama told me to do it. This is the same approach, experience and conviction that God is expecting of His children. Regardless of what we think and regardless of how we may be as children, HONOR OUR PARENTS. Then there is a reward for doing so…our days may be long in God’s service and favor! There is a blessing for honoring parents, if for nothing else, because they are parents.
My blessing is that my mama is now my best friend, confidant and colabourer.
I have more respect for her than I do for any other living being. She is real. She is saved. She is loving. She is MINE.
