You Can’t Handle The Truth
In the movie, A Few Good Men, Jack Nicholson had the exclamation that will always stick out in my memory when he yelled out in court, “You can’t handle the truth!!!” He did it to serve as the high point of the movie, It was masterful how everything built up to that point and when he screamed it all clarity was established and the plot then began to simmer down!
It was all based on that philosophical truth…WE CAN’T HANDLE THE TRUTH!
The scripture in John is exactly why that is a true statement. We can’t usually handle the truth because of what it does…THE TRUTH MAKES US FREE. We live our lives in bondage and the bondage in which we exist begins to become the very reality that we become one with. We don’t know of any reality except that one. Maya Angelou once wrote on the principle “I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings”. The caged bird sings because the cage does not contain its joy. The only problem is when it continues to sing in the cage even while the cage has been opened. The bird does not know the world outside of the cage and is even afraid of it to some degree. That is our problem and why we can’t handle the truth. The truth MAKES us free and we want to remain in our familiar bondage…Lord Have MERCY!!!!!
