Theme:
Nobody But You
Introduction:
- Nobody But You
[Nobody but you], nobody but you.
[Nobody but you], nobody but you.
When I was in trouble, you brought me over,
Nobody but you, Lord, nobody but you.
(other verses as desired and/or moan)
[You’ve been a lawyer in a courtroom]
[You’ve been a doctor in a sick room]
[You brought my mother]
- The Book of Exodus, the second book of the Bible and the second book of the Pentateuch, the five books of the law of Judaism, is the one of the primary texts of this study.
- The Book of Exodus documents God’s leading of the children of Israel out of their Egyptian captivity, into their 40 year passage through the wilderness, and to the Land of Canaan.
- The main character is Moses whom God chose to lead the people of Israel.
- The Book of Deuteronomy, the fifth book of the Pentateuch, consists chiefly of three discourses delivered to the people of Israel by Moses a short time before his death. They were spoken to all Israel in the plains of Moab, in the eleventh month of the last year of their wanderings.
- These addresses to the people are followed by what may be called three appendices, namely
(1) a song which God had commanded Moses to write;
(2) the blessings he pronounced on the separate tribes; and
(3) the story of his death and burial, written by some other hand, probably that of Joshua.
- Both the Book of Exodus and the Book of Deuteronomy, as the remainder of the Pentateuch, are believed by contemporary scholars to have been writings adopted by Moses, or, simply put, written by someone else other than Moses. However, there are many portions of information that leave the consensus to be that it was written by Moses.
- Specifically, our text is relaying a portion of “The Ten Commandments” or “The Decalogue”.
- The 10 Commandments were God-given
- Verse 1 says, “And God spake all these words”
- The 10 Commandments were God-authorized
- Verse 2 says, “I am the LORD thy God…”
- The 10 Commandments were God-centered
- The first commandment in Verse 3 says, “Thou shalt have no other gods before me.”
- We often overlook the fact that God made this commandment FIRST!!
- Not #2àThou shalt not make unto thee any graven image
- If there is Nobody but God, there will be no graven image.
- Not #3àThou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain
- If there is Nobody but God, we will trust that God can.
- Not #4àRemember the sabbath day, to keep it holy
- If there is Nobody but God, we will want to wrship Him in Spirit and in Truth.
- Not #5àHonour thy father and thy mother
- If there is Nobody but God, our earthly father and mother will be revered as our Heavenly Father is the highest.
- Not #6àThou shalt not kill.
- If there is Nobody but God, we won’t have the heart that would kill.
- Not #7àThou shalt not commit adultery.
- If there is Nobody but God, we will want to have the integrity of Job respect others and ourselves.
- Not #8àThou shalt not steal.
- If there is Nobody but God, God is enough and will supply our need.
- Not #9àThou shalt not bear false witness
- If there is Nobody but God, we will give what God desires…Truth on the inward parts.
- Not #10àThou shalt not covet thy neighbour’s house…wife…ox
- If there is Nobody but God, we will be looking to the “Hills” and not to see what our neighbor hasJ
- To be able to do anything else, as Believers, we must be able to say to God,
- Not #2àThou shalt not make unto thee any graven image
- We often overlook the fact that God made this commandment FIRST!!
- The first commandment in Verse 3 says, “Thou shalt have no other gods before me.”
- The 10 Commandments were God-given
NOBODY BUT YOU!!!!
Body:
- Three reasons why we should follow the first commandment!
- 1 è God is a Jealous God
- Exodus 20:5 tells us, “…for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God….”
- Jealousy is “a specific anger” – arising due to one’s “mate” being with another.
- g., Husband’s jealousy of his wife hanging around another man.
- Assumes a RELATIONSHIP
- God is our Father. That is inherently a relationship!
- g., a daughter starting to like boys stir jealousy in the heart of the Father.
- The father was everything for the daughter and now she is looking to another man…not goodJ
- Therefore, with God, he has created, kept, sustained, and liberated us…so He is not going to tolerate us worshipping another God!!!!
- The Jewish Nation stirred God’s jealousy à 1Kings 14:22, “And Judah did evil in the sight of the LORD, and they provoked him to jealousy with their sins which they had committed, above all that their fathers had done.”
- We do the same thing à 1Corinthians 10:21-22, “Ye cannot drink the cup of the Lord, and the cup of devils: ye cannot be partakers of the Lord’s table, and of the table of devils. Do we provoke the Lord to jealousy? are we stronger than he?”
- So, we need to remember that God said, “Thou shalt have no other gods before me”
- 2 è Without God we can do nothing
- We WANT to make sure that God is kept happy because we know the repercussions of being without Him.
- John 14:6, “Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.”
- THE WAY à We would be without GOOD DIRECTION
- John 14:2-4, “In my Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also. And whither I go ye know, and the way ye know.”
- THE TRUTH à We would be without SOUND DOCTRINE
- John 1:14, “And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.”
- 2John 1:4, “I rejoiced greatly that I found of thy children walking in truth, as we have received a commandment from the Father.”
- THE LIFE à We would be without TRUE LIVING
- John 10:10, “…I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.”
- THE WAY à We would be without GOOD DIRECTION
- Simply put without God we can do nothing!
- John 15:5, “…for without me ye can do nothing.”
- John 14:6, “Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.”
- We WANT to make sure that God is kept happy because we know the repercussions of being without Him.
- 3 è God must have ALL of our praise and worship or else — Consequences
- God expects ALL … our SELF and ABILITIES
- Deuteronomy 10:12, “And now, Israel, what doth the LORD thy God require of thee, but to fear the LORD thy God, to walk in all his ways, and to love him, and to serve the LORD thy God with all thy heart and with all thy soul,”
- Micah 6:8, “He hath shewed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the LORD require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God?”
- or ELSE à Luke 13:25-27, “When once the master of the house is risen up, and hath shut to the door, and ye begin to stand without, and to knock at the door, saying, Lord, Lord, open unto us; and he shall answer and say unto you, I know you not whence ye are: Then shall ye begin to say, We have eaten and drunk in thy presence, and thou hast taught in our streets. But he shall say, I tell you, I know you not whence ye are; depart from me, all ye workers of iniquity.” à the ultimate consequences of breaking the commandment!
- God expects ALL … our SELF and ABILITIES
- 1 è God is a Jealous God

- Jesus explained this commandment even further to give us understanding.
