Sing Your Song
Introduction:
- The Book of Psalms is the 19th book of the Old Testament and 2nd of the books of poetry. It is known to be the longest book of the bible with 150 chapters and contains the longest chapter of the bible, the 119th chapter of Psalms. Psalms is also organized in five divisions.
- The author is David, the God-Appointed King and originator of the Davidic line of Kingship and rule in Israel.
- Psalms is a book of praise and song consisting of verses that were rhythmically relayed in song as in poetry.
- Psalms can be divided into 6 classes based on their content:
- Hymns of praise to Jehovah
- Temple hymns
- Religious and moral songs of a general character
- Elegiac psalms, that is, lamentations, psalms of complaint, generally united with prayer for help
- Messianic psalms
- Historical psalms
- Our text coming from this book of songs is specifically about singing.
“Sing aloud unto God our strength: make a joyful noise unto the God of Jacob.”
- Singing brings to my remembrance a very special occurrence in my home one evening.
- Jasmine was working her homework and was not being very productive
- She wanted to go play
- I heard her crying but saying something unrecognizable in her tears.
- I walked upstairs to see what she was mumbling and realized that she was SINGING.
- She was singing, “I Love You Lord Today”
- While singing she was doing an even better job on completing the homework at a consistent pace
- SINGING was helping her to get her work done!!!!!
- When I asked her if she sang in school, she said that the teacher would not let her sing in class and then she cried even more.
- She loved her song but felt that no one would let her sing it!!
- I then told her to SING YOUR SONG and use this medium to help you to improve and excel in your studies!
- Jasmine was working her homework and was not being very productive
- Let’s look at singing or music: The Bible presents music in song as a primary means of communicating with God through praise and prayer.
- He wants you to call Him
- A song is another way to express your testimony and prayer to God!
- Our text says specifically to “Sing ALOUD unto God our strength”
- NOT sing softly….NOT sing quietly
- SING ALOUD!!
- NOT sing softly….NOT sing quietly
- Examples of SINGING ALOUD
- The slaves sang while they worked as a way to infuse RHYTHM and RELIEF into their work.
- Mothers often sing to their children to soothe and comfort them
- People often look to music as a way of calming their nerves or just giving them relief from their struggles.
- King Saul would call for David to come, play his harp and sing to him to soothe his spirit.
- There’s power in singing/music!
- Music is even used in sports to add energy to the cheers of the crowd and to the actual sports participants
- I had realized working with Jasmine that she does better academically when she sings while she works.
- So, just as I told Jasmine, I tell you today – SING YOUR SONG!!!!
Body:
- But before you do, God wants you to “check yourself before you wreck yourself”!
- To SING YOUR SONG, you must know something about “music”
- Music was core to the development of civilizations throughout history, including the Hebrews
- Jubal, the 5th generation grandson of Cain, was the father of the musically inclined of the chosen people
- Genesis 4:21, “And his brother’s name was Jubal: he was the father of all such as handle the harp and organ.”
- We all know of the account when Moses and the children of Israel struck up joyous songs after their deliverance
- Exodus 15:1, “Then sang Moses and the children of Israel this song unto the LORD,”
- Without having some degree of musical apprehension, you can’t sing a song. But, we black folks know some thing about music. It is all in us!
- We can sing when R&B is on the radio.
- We can sing or hum when we are in the shower, cleaning our homes, or sitting in traffic.
- We are a rhythmic people…we know something about music!!
- Jubal, the 5th generation grandson of Cain, was the father of the musically inclined of the chosen people
To SING YOUR SONG, the song must have a beat or rhythm
- Our college choir had a quote that we put as our theme for every Spring Concert….
- “In the beginning was the beat and the beat was the rhythm of God”
- Without a beat or rhythm
- The song does not flow
- The song is not catchy
- The song is not a song but a story, poem, or narration
- The beat or rhythm is the road on which the words travel to complete the journey
- We need a beat…and not the one Janet Jackson requested when she said “Gimme a beat”
- We need a beat…to keep us
- We need a beat…to soothe us
To SING YOUR SONG, the song must have lyrics of content
- Lyrics give verbally expressed substance to a song.
- The lyrics can make a song good or bad.
- The lyrics can influence the interpretation of the music
- Without lyrics, the person would have nothing to sing!
- Without God we would have no God to turn to or depend on!
To SING YOUR SONG, you must have something to sing with
- We must always remember that is a gift of God to be able to sing
- Some can’t even utter a sound
- Some cannot hear songs to be able to learn
- Thank God for His allowing us to come just as we are
- “Just as I am without one plea but that Thy blood was shed for me!”
To SING YOUR SONG, you must have a song
- Do you have a song to sing?
- Psalms 119:11, “Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.”
- The hymn brings it on home…
Yes, I’ll sing the wondrous story
Of the Christ Who died for me,
Sing it with the saints in glory,
Gathered by the crystal sea.
To SING YOUR SONG, you must know the song for yourself
- You must be a witness of what you are singing!
- It is important to be the first one to taste of the meal that has been prepared by you.
- Be a witness to your witness!!!
- 2 Peter 1:4, “Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.”
- It is important to be the first one to taste of the meal that has been prepared by you.
- The old Gospel song says it best…
I sing because I’m happy. I sing because I’m free.
His eye is on the sparrow and I KNOW He watches over me.
After you have checked yourself, SING YOUR SONG!
- Sing Your Song
- You don’t need an audience
- You don’t need the best voice
- Sing Your Song
- You have a rhythm
- You have a Word from God
- Sing Your Song
- When others don’t want to hear it
- When other don’t know it for themselves
- Sing Your Song
- That song is your PEACE
- That song is your POWER
- SING YOUR SONG!
Conclusion:
- My song is JESUS
Amazing Grace how sweet the sound that saved a wretch like me
I once was lost, but now I’m found…was blind but NOW I see
- My song is JESUS
Must Jesus bear the cross alone and all the world go free
No, there’s a cross for everyone and there’s a cross for me
- My song is JESUS
Father, I stretch my hands to Thee. No other help I know.
If Thou withdraw Thy self from me, oh, whither shall I go?
- I’m gonna sing my song
- Through the sun
- Through the rain
- Through the joy
- Through the pain
- He’s there when others are gone!
- He’s receives me when others would shun!
- I’m gonna SING!!! SING!!! SING!!!!
