Text:
Job 10:1:
My soul is weary of my life; I will leave my complaint upon myself; I will speak in the bitterness of my soul.
Matthew 11:27-29:
28 Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.
30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.
Theme:
When Your Spirit Gets Tired
Introduction:
- On the day of my Granddaddy’s 100th Birthday Party, I went for a ride with my brother, Vaughn, and we were just riding and talking. We have so much fun talking because we are truly brothers who love each other and both share in the lifestyle of being young, working hard, with a family of three girls, in the ministry, and trying to fulfill God’s expectations of us. Anyway, we were talking and Vaughn told me something that Rev. Hewlett, his father and my stepfather, told him in counseling. I truly respect Rev. Richard Hewlett as a God-called, powerful, wise man of God and IN God. Hewlett said, “Son, sometimes your spirit gets tired!” Oh, how that stuck with me! It is so true! And, it reveals, explains, and confirms so much to hear from Rev. Hewlett!
- When Your Spirit Gets Tired
- Job and Matthew:
- Job is the first book of poetry. Job deals with Divine Doctrine…Psalms with Divine Devotion…Proverbs with Divine Practicality.
- Job’s story is a familiar one:
- Job was noted as a “perfect and upright man”
- Job was tried by Satan as a test to see if he would curse God.
- Job lost everything and was left with afflicted with boils on his skin.
- The Gospel according to St. Matthew, the first book of the New Testament and of the Gospels of Jesus, the Christ, is the book that contains this first scripture.
- Matthew, the disciple of Christ, wrote in more detail of the life of Christ and His ministry than any other Gospel writer even though the book was written over 5-10 years later than the rest of the Gospels.
- There is a being physically tired:
- Fatigue, exhaustion, physically spent…EXAMPLES
- We then seek physical rest…EXAMPLES
- The Bible speaks of physical rest:
- Exodus 23:13 refers to the structure in Judaic culture of working for the first six days and designating the seventh day for REST.
- Leviticus 23:3 explains the Sabbath Day, “Six days shall work be done: but the seventh day is the sabbath of rest, an holy convocation; ye shall do no work therein: it is the sabbath of the LORD in all your dwellings.”
- After having fed the 5000 men, Jesus took the disciples onto a boat to go to the other side. This journey although ending in the miracle of Jesus calming the seas with the words, “Peace, be still”, had the purpose of allowing Jesus to physically rest from his traveling.
- In Mark 14:38, Jesus says, “Watch ye and pray, lest ye enter into temptation. The spirit truly is ready, but the flesh is weak.”
- This is not the rest that is referred to in the text “ye shall find rest”
Body:
- There is a being spiritually tired
- The A clause of the text in Job says cleary, “My soul is weary of my life”
- Jeremiah 31:25 confirms Jobs cry, “For I have satiated the weary soul, and I have replenished every sorrowful soul.”
- King James describes it as having a “weary soul”
- This is WHEN YOUR SPIRIT GETS TIRED!
- King James describes it as having a “weary soul”
- Psalm 119:28,“My soul melteth for heaviness: strengthen thou me according unto thy word.”
- King James describes it as having a “heavy soul”
- This is WHEN YOUR SPIRIT GETS TIRED!
- King James describes it as having a “heavy soul”
- What causes “you spirit to get tired”?
- Vanity/Sin
- Habakkuk 2:13, “Behold, is it not of the LORD of hosts that the people shall labour in the very fire, and the people shall weary themselves for very vanity?”
- Ephesians 6:12 explains, “For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.”
- Well doing
- Galatians 6:9, “And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.”
- Vanity/Sin
- “Your spirit being tired” is a good thing!
- It is through adversity that we realize God’s presence and prevalence in our lives.
- 2Timothy 2:12 explains, “If we suffer, we shall also reign with him: if we deny him, he also will deny us:”
- Galatians 6:17 confirms, “From henceforth let no man trouble me: for I bear in my body the marks of the Lord Jesus.”
- It is through adversity that we realize God’s presence and prevalence in our lives.
- Jesus had a “weary soul”
- It is described in Luke 22:44, “And being in an agony he prayed more earnestly: and his sweat was as it were great drops of blood falling down to the ground.”
- Jesus carried the sins of the world on His shoulders to Calvary!
Conclusion:
We then seek spiritual rest:
Matthew 11:29 says, “Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.”
- This form of rest is realized in the gifts of the Spirit in Galatians chapter 5 (explain rest in each one):
- Love, Joy, Peace, Longsuffering, Gentleness, Goodness, Faith, Meekness, Temperance:
- Isaiah 28:12 clarifies even further:
To whom he said, This is the rest wherewith ye may cause the weary to rest; and this is the refreshing: yet they would not hear.
- There are many hymns that speak of this REST:
- Jesus Is Calling — “Jesus is calling the weary to REST. Calling today. Calling today. Bring Him thy burden and thou shalt be blest. He will not turn thee away”
- In The Cross — “In the cross, in the cross, be my glory ever, ‘til my raptured soul shall find REST beyond the river.”
- Sit down, Servant – “Sit down, Servant, sit down. Sit down, Servant, sit down. Sit down, Servant, sit down. Sit down and REST a little while.”
- Is Your All On The Alter — “Is your all on the alter of sacrificed laid? Your heart does the Spirit control? You can only be blest and have peace and sweet REST as you yield Him your body and soul.”
Therefore, being PHYSICALLY TIRED and being SPIRITUALLY TIRED are very DIFFERENT:
- Being physically tired means not energy…being spiritually tired means no God
- Being physically tired is a spiritual prerequisite…being spiritually tired is a physical predetermination
- Being physically tired takes life…being spiritually tired gives life
The PHYSICAL REST and SPIRITUAL REST are very DIFFERENT:
- Physical rest is the relief of the body…Spiritual rest is the relief of the soul.
- Physical rest is temporary comfort…Spiritual rest is eternal security.
- Physical rest is the body’s request…Spiritual rest is the soul’s requirement.
- Physical rest leaves you depleted…Spiritual rest assures hope>
- Job 3:17, “There the wicked cease from troubling; and there the weary be at rest.”
- “I’m gonna hide behind the mountain where the chilly winds don’t blow”
-
One day…some day….on that day!!!!!!!
