Theme:
You’ve Gotta Have Something
Introduction:
- The Book of Genesis is so-aptly named because it is the “Book of Beginnings”. There is no other existing account that is so old or so widely used as is. No other document contradicts it, but many documents support it.
- The text takes us into a critical time frame for our existence…In the Beginning
- In the beginning…God – God existed in the beginning.
- Revelation 1:8, “I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty.”
- In the beginning…God created à In the beginning, God began to begin the creation of the beginning.
- Revelation 4:11, “Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created.”
- In the beginning…God created the heaven and the earth. à The beginnings
- The earth was unique…it was without form and void and full of darkness
- Not all things that God creates are good-looking or good-feeling to us
- Isaiah 55:8, “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the LORD.”
- We would say that in the beginning there was NOTHING on the earth.
- Nothing is what we describe as the absence of something
- Something is what we describe as an element of substance and value
- Therefore is you say that there was NOTHING on the earth then it is saying that there were no elements of substance or value on the earth.
- In the beginning…God – God existed in the beginning.
Body:
- The R&B song says, “Nothing from nothing leaves nothing. You’ve gotta have something if you want to be with me.”
- Simply put, if you don’t have anything then you have nothing on which to build a relationship.
- Intelligence, moral stability, money, nice home, good job, good looks
- How picky are we when it comes to social relationships
- We stick to our guns on what we want and claim to need
- Does God hold US to such strict regulations to have a relationship with Him? …NO
- “Just as I am without one plea but that Thy blood was shed for me!”
- However, God does hold the RELATIONSHIP to such strict regulations
- “Nothing from nothing leaves nothing”
- We have to identify ourselves as nothing, filthy rags
- 1Corinthians 13:2, “And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing.”
- We have to identify what the world has to offer as nothing when it does not offer Christ!
- Philippians 3:8, “Yea doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them but dung, that I may win Christ,”
- We have to identify ourselves as nothing, filthy rags
- “Nothing from nothing leaves nothing”
- In mathematics, Zero (0) is known as a PLACEHOLDER…it has no value of its own
- It is neither positive nor negative
- It merely holds the place of the entity that philosophically exists between +1 and -1
- A person is a PLACEHOLDER
- No value, no form, no substance in and of themselves
- Person merely holds the place that philosophically exists between Good and Evil, God and Satan…being neither wholly GOOD or wholly EVIL.
- In mathematics, Zero (0) is known as a PLACEHOLDER…it has no value of its own
- “Nothing from nothing leaves nothing”
- Our nothing combined with the nothing of the world’s goods leaves us with nothing…no benefit!
- Nothing from nothing
- You from your supposed friends
- You from your job
- You from your nice home
- You from your popularity
- “Nothing from nothing leaves nothing”
- Simply put, if you don’t have anything then you have nothing on which to build a relationship.
Conclusion:
- Nothing…you have to add something of value to it to get something of value or substance out of it
- 0+0=0…no change
- John 15:5, “I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.”
- 0+1=1…VALUE added and change occurred
- It was the movement of God’s Spirit upon the face of the deep that gave form and order to the shapeless chaos of the earth’s existence.
- 2, “And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.”
- 0 (earth) + 1 (God’s Spirit) = 1 (Ready for God to use!)
- 0 (Me) + 1 (God’s Spirit) = 1 (Fruits of the Spirit) [No more me!]
- The Spirit is sent in times of nothingness and no value à The Spirit is SOMETHING
- –The comforter is promised (Matthew)
- –The comforter is sent (Acts)
- –The comforter is received (Acts)
- And the Spirit of God moved…
- When Daniel prayed in the lion’s den
- When Jonah prayed in the belly of the great fish
- When Solomon prayed at the completion of the Temple
- And the Spirit of God moved…
- When Jesus prayed to the Father, “Into Thy hands I commend my Spirit”
- When the apostles needed power to be effective in their ministry
- When a man’s life was changed by Peter admitting, “silver and gold have I none”
- And the Spirit of God moved…
- In my life…
- When I was down to my last dime
- When I reduced to my lowest common denominator
- When I could not go “anotha’ futha”
- When I had fallen and couldn’t get up
- And the Spirit of God moved…
